Mapping Coastal Wetlands Using Polarimetric Alos Palsar Data in North Carolina

چکیده
The purpose of this study is to map wetlands using multi-polarimetric and polarimetric analysis of ALOS Palsar data in coastal North Carolina. Radar sensor offers reliable acquisition of wetlands which are mandated, by Congress, to be mapped every ten years. Radar data products were generated using Wishart supervised (HH-HVVV) and Wishart unsupervised (entropy and dominant scattering mechanism) classification algorithms. Classifications were done within PolsarPro4.0 software (ESA, 2009) and accuracy assessment done in ArcGIS 9.3. To meet the goal of mapping wetlands, this study assessed Palsar 10 m data discrimination potential based on (a) vegetation community classes as determined by the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management (NCDCM), and (b) to structure-based classes as determined by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

Coastal Wetland Mapping Using Time Series Sar Imagery and Lidar: Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina
Mapping and monitoring of vast coastal wetlands vulnerable to dynamic coastal erosion, sea-level rise, fire, and marsh succession require remote sensing approaches that capitalize on newly available sensors, advanced classification techniques, and combinations of multi-sensor and multi-date data. This pilot study assesses the feasibility and accuracy potential for mapping specific coastal wetla...
متن کاملThe Influence of Polarimetric Parameters and an Object-Based Approach on Land Cover Classification in Coastal Wetlands
The purpose of this study was to examine how different polarimetric parameters and an object-based approach influence the classification results of various land use/land cover types using fully polarimetric ALOS PALSAR data over coastal wetlands in Yancheng, China. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, five other classifications (the Wishart supervised classification, the proposed me...
متن کاملFrozen Ground Monitoring Using Palsar/alos Data
Microwave remote sensing has shown proof of its effectiveness for frozen ground mapping due to the high difference of permittivity between frozen and unfrozen soil. However, the characterization of seasonal frozen ground still remains a problematic application. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) on the 24 of January 2006. This sat...
متن کاملInitial Polarimetric Calibration of PALSAR
This paper discusses an initial polarimetric calibration of ALOS PALSAR. ALOS was launched on January 24, 2006. PALSAR, which is one of ALOS three sensors, is the first spaceborne L−band polarimetric synthetic aperture radar. It is expected that PALSAR polarimetric data is used for many applications such as agriculture, forestry, ocean, natural disasters etc. Thus, polarimetric calibration is a...
متن کاملPolarimetric calibration and validation for ALOS/PALSAR
The objectives of my proposal are to calibrate and validate the polarimetric data acquired by ALOS (Advanced land observing satellite)/PALSAR (Phased array type L-band synthetic aperture radar). In this report, we show the polarimetric calibration parameter of PALSAR derived by Quegan method and Amazon data. Moreover, we confirm the accuracy of Faraday rotation angle derived from PALSAR data as...
